About Kerrang! End Of year Lists 1982
In 1982, Kerrang! Obviously didn’t know where they were heading.
Metal had become chart-topping music and Maiden’s No. 1 in the U.K. with The Number of the Beast was proof that harder music appealed to the masses – stuff that wasn’t built around the bluesy hard rock riffs from the ‘70s.
But Kerrang! thought a little differently and you could really argue there are too many not-too-heavy metal albums here.
Ok, Scorpions hadn’t started whistling in Gorky Park yet, but still, shouldn’t Maiden be up there?
And Tom Petty? What were you thinking Kerrang!? And did really Journey make the best single?
Run to the hills and die!
So what are we missing here?
Well, Whichfinder General’s Death Penalty is a vastly underrated album, and in hindsight, Venom’s Black Metal should be there. They planted a seed for a new style of music.
And for us who fancy German speed, Accept’s Restless and Wild.
The intro, first verse and first chorus define metal in 1982.
